BtG x Apple – An Education and Technology Collab

Exposing children to technology is quite a taboo topic for us educators. However, if we come to think of it, 21st century learners are considered as digital natives. Thus, saying that, we are living in a world where we cannot eliminate technology. If we stand in a different point of view, technology isn’t innovated to obstruct progress but rather to contribute to any form of development. Of course, there will always be clear zones of its downside especially to young learners. Hence, the power lies in our hands for it to be a tool of destruction or a tool of creation, growth, and empowerment.

Bridging the Gap is a believer that technology can coexist with learning, and it can contribute to creating a conducive learning environment for every child, including those with neurodiverse needs. To be precise, Bridging the Gap advocates on using technologies as part of our life as educators. Adding on to that, BtG Team – safe to say – are Apple users and has utilised these products in our day-to-day tasks.

What we love about Apple…

Bridging the Gap has equipped the team with apple devices. From every BtG Early Interventionist and Therapist’s administrative tasks to facilitating interactive activities, we have used devices such as MacBook and iPads.

Simply, Apple has features of user interaction and experience that are unmatched! We use it in our Circle Time activities, and we use it with our interactive projectors.

Doing our admin tasks have been easy breezy also with its App features and general functions – not to mention the seamless sharing functions. Not just that, it’s inclined to promoting personalisation. You’ll definitely own that digital space and can customise your device according to your liking – in a much different level.

Unlocking more features…

But wait, there’s more! It’s surprising that a lot of Apple users has features yet to be explored. Apple has been generous when it comes to features and sometimes only a few functions has been commonly used. Some functions appear to be insignificant, but once you have unlocked it, it’s a game changer!

Good thing, Apple doesn’t gatekeep these awesome features from us. Apple Singapore has trainings open for everyone to maximise the potential of their devices.

Nestled in the bustling heart of Orchard Road, Singapore, the Apple Centre beckons with its promise of innovation and transformative learning experiences.  For us, a group of educators participating in Apple training last 18th to 19th of June 2024, this iconic space became more than just a venue—it became a catalyst for personal and professional growth.

Stepping into the Apple Centre was like stepping into a world where technology seamlessly blends with creativity. The sleek design and inviting atmosphere had set the stage for an immersive journey into Apple’s ecosystem. As teachers dedicated to bridging educational divides, we were eager to explore how Apple’s tools and philosophies could enhance our classrooms and empower our students.

Our Day 1 and Day 2 training sessions were nothing short of inspiring. Led by dynamic facilitators – Eric, Nelson, and Ashlee – we delved into the intricacies of Apple’s products, from mastering the iPad’s functions to unlocking the creative and functional potential of MacBook tools. It included training to maximise the use of iPhones too for both personal and work-relevant use.

One of our favourite things is Apple’s accessibility features where it is a lot useful not just for personal use, but also when facilitating children who are using devices. The Guided Access feature allows adults to have control over the apps that are only necessary for children to use. For instance, when using iPad as AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) devices, we won’t need to worry whether the child will actually switch to other apps or tinker with other iPad functions.

Each lesson was not just about learning new skills but also about envisioning how these tools could ignite curiosity and innovation among our students.

Absolutely, reimagined…

Beyond the technical aspects, the training encouraged us to think differently about education. Workshops challenged us to reimagine lesson plans using Apple’s educational resources, fostering a culture of collaboration and digital literacy in our classrooms. The experience was not just about adopting new technologies but about embracing a mindset that values creativity, critical thinking, and personalized learning experiences.

The support we received at the Apple Centre was exceptional. Trainers patiently guided us through hands-on activities, ensuring we felt confident in our abilities to integrate technology effectively. Their enthusiasm and dedication mirrored our own passion for empowering students through meaningful educational experiences.

As educators, our time at the Apple Centre was profoundly impactful. It equipped us with practical skills and strategies to enrich our teaching practices and engage our students in innovative ways. More importantly, it reignited our passion for learning and affirmed our commitment to preparing the next generation for a rapidly evolving world.

Leaving the Apple Centre, we departed with more than just knowledge; we carried with us a renewed sense of purpose and excitement. The experience inspired us to continue bridging the gap in education, using technology not only to enhance learning outcomes but also to cultivate creativity and empathy among ourselves and our students.

This short training has empowered the BtG Team to embrace innovation with confidence, knowing that we have the tools and support to create meaningful change in our classrooms and beyond.
